Is it compliant to have no steel stamp in the thermos?
Oct 13, 2024
At present, it is the season of cold air invasion, and the recent cold wave has also left a vivid memory for many old and young people. At this time, stainless steel insulated cups have become a daily necessity for more and more people, and how to choose a quality and safe insulated cup has become a compulsory course. Recently, some consumers reported to reporters that they found some stainless steel insulated cups without steel seals on the inner liner. So, is this product compliant?
Recently, a reporter from Yangcheng Evening News visited the market in Guangzhou to understand the relevant situation. At a large shopping mall in Tianhe District, a shop filled with thermos cups at the entrance caught the attention of reporters. There are a wide variety of stainless steel insulated cups here, with cute shapes and steel seals with the words 304 and 316 on the inner lining. According to the owner's introduction, the shop mainly sells joint products of an internationally renowned animation company, and the products displayed on the counter are "joint designs".
Seeing that the reporter had no intention of purchasing the products in front of the counter, the boss pulled the reporter into the store and said that the "regular" stainless steel insulated cups here could be sold at a 50% discount. According to the reporter's inspection, some of these "ordinary" thermos cups do not have steel seals. The boss explained, "This is an old product that doesn't have a steel stamp." Later, the reporter contacted the company that produces the product, and the customer service also said that the product was produced 5 years ago and has now been discontinued. They also said, "The cups produced before didn't have a steel stamp
Are products without steel stamp markings on the inner liner compliant? With confusion, the reporter consulted the current implementation standard for product labeling of stainless steel insulated cups in China - GB4806.1-2016 "National Food Safety Standard General Safety Requirements for Food Contact Materials and Products". The standard states: "When it is not possible to display all information on the product or product label due to technical reasons, it can be displayed in the product manual or accompanying documents." Therefore, the inner liner seal is not the only "touchstone" for stainless steel insulated cups.
In addition, the reporter noticed that the implementation standard for stainless steel insulated cups in China in terms of steel is GB4806.9-2016 "National Food Safety Standard for Metal Materials and Products in Contact with Food", which clearly specifies the types of stainless steel: "Stainless steel tableware containers, food production and operation tools, and equipment should be made of austenitic stainless steel, austenitic ferritic stainless steel, ferritic stainless steel and other stainless steel materials; stainless steel tableware and drilling and grinding tools for food production machinery and equipment can also be made of martensitic stainless steel materials
It is worth noting that the austenitic stainless steel mentioned in the standard includes most of the stainless steel materials on the market, such as 201, 304, and 316 stainless steel. Experts say that the stainless steel used in thermos cups mainly contains two metals, chromium and nickel. The higher the chromium content in steel, the stronger its corrosion resistance. The combination of nickel and chromium can improve strength and enhance the corrosion resistance of stainless steel. At the same time, experts also point out that nickel and chromium are essential elements for the human body and participate in necessary metabolism. Whether heavy metals are toxic actually depends on their dosage, and the amount of these heavy metals dissolved under normal use is usually trace.
